Angie Hiesl creates installations using Senior citizens who are perched on white chairs bolted to the façades of buildings, 20 feet or so up from the ground. They perform uneventful tasks such as reading the paper, knitting, and folding laundry, unfazed by the surprised passers-by staring up at them.
I really really like this because it makes me think: Hey! That old person should get down from there! That’s dangerous! They could die! -Oh.
I think the message is that the elderly are constantly on the verge of death but we don’t notice; they’re always doing the things they’ve always done like reading the paper, etc but we don’t think about how little time they might have left. This installation visualises the looming threat of death.
